This activity begins with a German postcard of a cavalry battle around Ypres in 1915. The postcard is a romantic version of warfare around Ypres from 1914-1918. Students will compare and contrast the presentation of Ypres in the postcard, with other historical sources from the time. They will discover that although the postcard presents a fictional view of battle, it is nonetheless revealing of attitudes towards what the home front should be told about Ypres. Students can then discuss the motivations for this fictional presentation and what it reveals to us about the conflict.
