As a former journalist, the fascist leader Benito Mussolini was deeply aware about the importance of the mass media in the creation of consensus. During his whole ruling period he often intervened not only in what mass media should publish or not, but also about which form and which style they should use in carrying out his orders. This activity is made of three steps aimed to understand the peculiar role that Mussolini assigned to the press and the tools he used to reach it. He pretended that press was free, but actually it wasn’t. How did journalists cope with that?
